EMC and Wireless Industry Standards Addressed at May Meeting Series of ANSC C63®

Active technical contributors to the American National Standards Committee (ANSC) C63 (Electromagnetic Compatibility) will meet in person at TÜV Rheinland in Boxborough, Massachusetts, the week of May 5, 2025. The committee convenes regularly both virtually and in person to address the standards maintained and developed by ANSC C63, including the seminal ANSI C63.4 “Methods of Measurement of Radio-Noise Emissions from Low-Voltage Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Range of 9 kHz to 40 GHz.” As part of the goal to improve the quality and efficiency of measurement techniques, the committee welcomes input from industry on revisions to its standards.

During the May meeting series, the committee will also address the new ANSI C63.25 series of standards for EMC test site validation. The series includes C63.25.1 “Validation Methods for Radiated Emission Test Sites, 1 GHz to 18 GHz,” which includes the applications of time domain (TD) and site voltage standing wave ratio (SVSWR); new procedures for site validation measurements in C63.25.2 (30 MHz to 1 GHz); and a novel technique using cylindrical mode filtered (CMF) SVSWR measurements for test site validation and antenna calibration from 18 GHz to 40 GHz included in the draft standard C63.25.3.

The committee will also continue working on new editions of many of the wireless and ISM standards such as C63.10 “Procedures for Compliance Testing of Unlicensed Wireless Devices,” C63.26 “Compliance Testing of Transmitters Used in Licensed Radio Services,” C63.29 “Methods of Measurement of Radio‐Frequency Emissions from Lighting Devices,” and C63.31 “Methods of Measurement of Radio-Frequency Emissions from Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) Equipment.”

Common Test & Calibration Uses of a Portable Signal Generator in The Field

This versatile field device generates signals that mimic various sensors to test and calibrate equipment. It helps technicians troubleshoot connections and verify system performance. Portable and battery-powered, it's designed for on-site diagnostic work in industrial environments.

To further educate industry on matters of radiated emissions maximization, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society Boston Chapter is hosting a hybrid meeting at TÜV Rheinland on Monday, May 5, from 5:00 to 8:30 pm. Those interested can register to attend in person or virtually. Speakers include Art Wall, former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Representative to ANSC C63, and Zhong Chen, Chief Engineer with ETS-Lindgren and Vice-Chair of ANSC C63. ANSC C63 committee members Nicholas Abbondante, Chief EMC Engineer with Intertek and Chair of C63 Subcommittee 4 (Wireless and ISM Equipment Measurements), and Bob Mitchell, Director of Laboratory Technology and Innovation with TÜV Rheinland, are also speakers on the technical program.

A highlight of the meeting will be the live demonstration of two potential measurement techniques to maximize radiated emissions above 1 GHz. Attendees will view live demonstrations of each measurement technique in TÜV Rheinland’s 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber, helping them gain a clearer understanding through firsthand experience. More information about the agenda and technical program for this Boston Chapter meeting is available here, including speaker presentation titles, abstracts, and biographies, as well as a registration link. There is no charge to attend the meeting, but advance registration is required, as space is limited. For remote attendees, please register using the link above; information on attending the meeting virtually will be provided following registration.

“Demonstrations greatly aid in the understanding of the measurement techniques specified in the ANSC C63 standards,” said Mr. Chen. “By conducting the demonstrations at TÜV Rheinland for the Boston Chapter meeting, our goal is to demonstrate two measurement techniques to keep the measurement antenna aimed at the source of emissions: ‘boresight’ and linear scan.”
