New IEC Standards Published for Electronic Vehicle Direct Current Fast Charging

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) announced the release of a new international standard that begins to create a global structure for introducing solutions for the fast charging of electronic vehicles (EV). The standard was published in two parts, IEC 61851-23 and IEC 61851-24.

IEC 61851-23 applies to the connection of d.c. fast charging installation and the EV with regards to the control and communication. The second part, IEC 62851-24, describes the protocols for digital communications between the off-board d.c. fast charging station and the EV. The development of these new standards is the result of global collaboration of OEMs, automotive manufacturers and electricity utilities to overcome numerous global challenges for EV d.c. fast charging systems.
