A team of researchers from the University of Michigan have developed a unique transducer that is capable of converting terahertz light into ultrasound waves and can transmit the waves.
Today’s detectors have limitations for certain applications like chemical and weapons detection and medical imaging. These newly designed transducers have the ability to respond to the energy of individual terahertz light pulses instead of a continuous flow of terahertz rays. The increased response speed of this new transducer allows for real-time terahertz imaging.
