Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), a team of researchers at the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) have developed a new rechargeable battery technology that is scalable, low-cost and low-energy making it a greener option and practical for commercial applications.
This new technology more than doubles the capacity of lithium-ion battery andoes while preserving the high capacity even after being charged and discharged more than 1000 times. This development is valuable for mobile computing and the telecom industry but also for the electric vehicle market where smaller and lighter batteries are needed to hold charges longer and maintain their performance through the lifetime of the product. The rechargeable battery technology is expected to grow to from $11.8 billion in 2010 to $53.7 billion in 2020.
