The School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University recently had a grand opening for their new Laboratory for Systems Integrity and Reliability (LASIR). The 20,000 square foot facility will allow researchers to validate theories and models for security, energy, and manufacturing projects.
Visitors to the laboratory were able to learn about several of the research projects the University has worked on through three different kiosks. The security kiosk described the lab’s “smart cleat” project that created a new method to determine if military vehicles have severely damaged suspension or a drive train by driving over an instrumented steep speed bump. The energy kiosk detailed a new system that keeps wind turbines pointed directly into the wind within an accuracy of less than one degree. The manufacturing kiosk demonstrated a new infrared detection system that shows spots where lithium is too high during the manufacture of electrodes for lithium ion batteries.
