Upgrade Your EMC Chamber Performance with New Anechoic Absorber

ETS-Lindgren’s new Model EMC-20PCL anechoic absorber is an ultra wideband absorber optimized for EMC applications, including testing per MIL-STD-461D/E/F and RTCA-DO-160.

The blunt tip 50.8 cm (20 in) height absorber is ideal for installation in new chambers as well as for retrofits of existing chambers. Its design is an evolution of traditional pyramidal polyurethane absorber that combines carefully balanced dielectric properties with a special reduced profile, blunt-tip geometry that is well suited for EMC testing in a compact space.  The blunt tip design feature also reduces possible absorber tip damage.   The absorber offers performance from 80 MHz to 40 GHz and 200 V/m continuous wave radiated field strength.  Power handling of the absorber has been proven to safely withstand up to 0.5 watt/in² or 775 watt/m².

VSWR and its Effects on Power Amplifiers

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio results from an impedance mismatch between a source (an amplifier) and a load (test application). This mismatch can influence the performance of the source.

“We manufacture this absorber from high quality, low density polyurethane foam using a two-step manufacturing process to evenly impregnate the foam with a proprietary conductive carbon formula and fire resistant salts,” said Kefeng Liu, ETS-Lindgren’s Director for RF Materials.  “This unique manufacturing process ensures both the uniformity of the carbon impregnation and the stability of the absorber substrate electrical properties by isolating the active ingredient from the fire-retardant chemicals.  The chemicals are necessary to provide flame retardancy against potential fire hazards.  In addition, this product is manufactured using ETS-Lindgren’s new non-hygroscopic flame retardant formula that further ensures no absorption of moisture to the absorber substrate that may impact its electrical performance,” added Mr. Liu.

Model EMC-20PCL meets the fire retardant standards of NRL 8093 Tests 1, 2, and 3; MIT MS-8-21; UL 94; and DIN 4102-B2.  In tests for flammability, the absorber has an ASTM E84-84 flame spread index of 35 and a smoke developed index of 450.  Maximum service temperature is 90º C (190º F) continuous.  Model EMC-20PCL is available in the traditional blue color.  Other colors are available upon request.
