The European Commission released two updates to toy safety standards that will affect U.S. toy manufacturers and distributors exporting their products into Europe.
An updated version of the “Guidance Document on Technical Documentation” was released that details compliance for each type of toy. The document also includes a model number assigned to each toy type that reminds suppliers to provide a list of materials, chemicals and components used in the toy. The second update by the EC was to amend current restrictions of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006. Limits were placed for allowable PAHs in rubber and plastic articles with prolonged skin or mouth contact and special limits for toys in direct and prolonged or short-term repetitive contact with skin or mouth.
