Researchers at the University of Missouri are developing a monitoring and alert system that could lead to improved care for patients and reduced costs for individuals and health systems. The system would provide access to a patient’s individualized health information between their home and hospitals.
The system uses sensors and integrated video-game technology to monitor walking patterns, pulse, and respiration rates of patients in assisted-care facilities. If the system detects a patient falling, the facility can send help immediately, and the patient’s physician can evaluate video captured by the sensor to determine how the patient fell. The team’s goal is to have these systems installed in the homes of elderly individuals to allow them to live longer and healthier lives independently and for adult children to feel confident that their loved ones are being monitoring and will receive help if needed.
