Two New Standards-Development Projects Started to Improve Smart Grid Fault Management and Other Functionality

The IEEE has recently approved two new projects to advance the standardization of phasor data concentrators (PDCs) with standards to improve fault management and other smart grid functionality.

IEEE PC37.247™ “Standard for Phasor Data Concentrators for Power Systems” will focus on standardizing requirements for PDCs to improve the of interoperability of devices, systems and applications that use synchrophasors data. The standard will also manage data aggregation, processing of synchrophasors and other synchronized data, handling of commands, performance and testing.

IEEE PC37.248™ “Guide for Common Format for Naming Intelligent Electronic Devices” will be a guide to provide a naming convention for physical and virtual intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), review the numerous environments where device names are needed and the benefits behind using a naming convention.
