A research team has installed a monitoring system at the University of Malta to detect thunderstorms and forecast severe weather. This system is part of a larger monitoring system called the European Lightning Network (LINET).
The LINET uses sensitive sensors that have been installed throughout Europe to measure electromagnetic waves released by lightning strikes. The specific location of a lightning strike is calculated by sophisticated triangulation algorithms while the time of the strike is captured by GPS modules. The strength and polarity of the lightning are also recorded. The LINET system is used by weather services, military, transportation, and other organizations to aid in their operations.
