White-Rodgers of St. Louis, MO, is recalling about 180,000 of its programmable thermostats manufactured in China.
White-Rodgers reports that the programmable thermostats continuously charge the backup AA batteries that are used to power the thermostat’s clock. This condition can cause the batteries to leak, resulting in a fire hazard to consumers. The company says that it has received reports of three incidents involving minor property damage associated with the recalled thermostats, but no reports of injuries.
The recalled programmable thermostats were distributed by more than 40 utility companies nationwide as part of local energy conservation programs, and by various HVAC wholesalers for about $150.
