EMC Test Laboratory Software Program Development: A Proven Process

1310 F3 coverAn EMC test engineer’s primary responsibility includes creating test plans, procedures, analyzing test data, generating test reports, and mitigating noncompliance challenges. Many times the EMC engineer must assume the role of a software test engineer and create test programs necessary to meet the project objectives.

Filter Connectors from a 2013 Perspective

1308 F4 coverFilter connectors are often a misunderstood product for many components engineers. The lack of understanding is often a result of the fact that filter connectors seldom make the “What’s New” headlines and because many engineers typically don’t have a need for them. But those who do are certainly glad they are available!

Experiments In EMC: How Common Mode Currents Are Created

1307 F2 cover“I’ve all ready read the books on EMC and visited a lot of home pages... But all these references did not mention anything about the physical phenomenon that causes common mode currents... Are common mode emissions inherent in any physical system? Can I model them?” Overheard on the ‘Net

It’s by no means a trivial question. And, in spite of decades of hand waving by authors and consultants, the principal mechanism by which common mode currents are created in digital devices was not well understood until the decade of the 90s. In this article, we’ll explore the physics behind the creation of common mode currents, and perform some experiments to verify our understanding.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Assessment of Wireless Emissions in Shipboard Spaces

Electromagnetic compatibility of wireless communications and sensor networks with mission critical electronic equipment is assessed for below-deck spaces on ships and submarines. With intentional wireless emission of radio-frequency (RF) energy into the reverberant spaces, it is necessary to measure and characterize the statistical electromagnetic environment (EME) and to predict maximum electric field strengths to a specified confidence level.
