Volkswagen Recalls 2009 Routan Minivan for Air Bag Defect

Volkswagen is recalling the 2009 Routan because the air bag control units can fail. This defect can prevent the air bags from deploying during a crash, or it can make them deploy inadvertently, which could cause a crash and increase the risk of injury to people sitting in the front seats of the minivan.

NHTSA Slams Takata with $200 Million Penalty

Japanese air bag manufacturer Takata has been hit with a record setting $200 million fine for violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Takata’s exploding air bags have prompted an unprecedented punitive response from NHTSA. “Today, we are holding Takata responsible for its failures, and we are taking strong action to protect the traveling public,” said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind.
