Submersible pumps recalled for shock hazard

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission said an Indiana company is voluntarily recalling its submersible pump motor controllers because of a risk of electrical shock.

Franklin Electric Co. is recalling about 38,000 of its Pumptec Electric Motor Controllers because a label on the device can lose adhesion, exposing the circuitry inside, which could deliver an electric shock to the user. So far no injuries have been reported.

The recalled controller is for 115v/230v submersible motors rated 1/3 to 1 1/2 horsepower with model number 5800020600 and date codes of 06F45 through 09L45. The model number and date code can be found on the nameplate label located on the right-hand side of the enclosure, the CPSC stated.

The units affected by the recall were sold between June 2006 and November 2009 at a list price of $245. Customers are advised to stop using the pump until further notice.
