Scientists from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany have proposed using TV frequencies to expand existing WiFi networks to meet the demand for future wireless data transfer. The bands allocated for TV transmission are being used less often than previously. The study also recommends that the frequencies become common property and made available to the public at no cost.
Currently, wireless data transmission occurs on WLAN networks that are limited to high-frequency ranges 2 GHz and above. The use of these lower frequency ranges could extend wireless networks significantly even in cities where there is limited transmission capacity.
