After two years of tests and refinement, Peek Retina, a mobile eye exam device, shows promise in becoming a reliable solution for increasing the accessibility of eye care health services in remote locations.

The device can be attached to a smartphone and makes it possible for health workers to look inside and capture high-quality images of the retina. This portable device can help to identify conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts as well as underlying conditions like diabetes. The release of this invention is anticipated for October 2015 with current efforts to raise funds that will help to fight avoidable blindness.

Around 39 million people are blind — 80% of this blindness is avoidable, but in many regions, people don’t have access to eye care.
