Six States Selected as Drone Research Test Sites

Alaska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Virginia were selected as locations to develop test sites for drones. These states were selected due to their climate, geography and air traffic environments.

The goal of the testing sites will be to determine if drones can detect and avoid aircraft and other obstacles. Currently, drones are primarily used by the military, but other industries are looking to utilize unmanned aerial vehicles. The Federal Aviation Administration does not allow commercial use of drones but is working to develop guidelines for use by the end of 2015 and has projected approximately 7,500 commercial drones could be in the air within five years.
