Scientists Develop Spray-on Solar Cells

University of Sheffield scientists developed a way to produce perovskite solar cells using a spray-paint process. This process could lead to a reduction in the cost of solar electricity.

This new process of spray-painting solar cells is similar to how paint is applied to cars and graphic printing.  It also allows solar cells to be made using less energy; perovskite offers low material costs with high efficiency, compared to higher priced materials like silicon. The engineers were able to create a solar cell prototype using this new spray-painting method to produce a solar cell that had 11 percent efficiency. The development of spray-painting perovskite onto solar could lead to efficient, low-cost solar cell devices that are manufactured from high volume roll-to-roll processes.
