Russia Claims Development of Drone-Based EMP System

Military researchers at Russia’s Moscow Border Institute have reportedly developed a drone with an onboard electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generator capable of impacting the operation of enemy drones and other electronic systems.

According to a posting to the website of The EurAsian Times, the newly developed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) includes an EMP device powered by solar panels on the drone’s wings that could knock out electrical and electronic systems and devices within a certain radius of the drone. The EMP-equipped drone could also be used to disable other drones within the area.

The drone-based EMP system is reportedly part of Russia’s effort to ramp up its development of electronic warfare technologies and to stem at least in part the impact of Western sanctions that limit Russia’s access to electronic and aviation components.
