Rules Being Drafted to Require V2V Technology in Future Cars and Trucks

The US Government is beginning to draft policies to require vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology to be included in new cars and light trucks. V2V technology uses a radio signal to transmit the vehicle’s location, speed, and other information to warn drivers of a potential accident.

V2V technology works up to approximately 300 yards away and can alert drivers that another vehicle equipped with the same technology is about to run a red light or  suddenly stop. This technology is separate from the automated safety features and radar already being built in higher-end vehicles, but the government sees these two technologies could make for safer driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a research report that this technology could prevent 592,000 left-turn and intersection crashes yearly, saving thousands of lives.
