University of Maryland researchers are using the legs of insects as inspiration to create new micro-robots that will be able to travel uneven terrain quickly. The team is also working to have the robots jump and clear obstacles in their way.
The team is currently testing out a variety of materials and designs on larger sized robots and then scaling them down for use in the micro-robots. Engineer Sarah Berberiter sees these micro-robots as a mobile sensor platform that can be used in a variety of real-world environments including searching through rubble after a natural disaster or in covert surveillance operations.
