Research Groups Press Federal Government to Increase Security of Power Grids

Two research groups are pushing for the federal government to develop new power grid security processes after recent security exercises and an attack on a Californian utility in 2013 have shown vulnerability.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has recommended an evaluation of the vulnerability of the power grid, and a review of utility companies’ security efforts. The Battelle Memorial Institute reported that the current security efforts of utility companies are not adequate because the companies do not consider how grid failure in one region affects another region. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is currently taking into considering new safety regulations for the industry, and the grid must be improved to handle weaknesses.
