Recalled satellite communicator can lose emergency communications capability

Spot LLC of Covington, LA has recalled about 15,400 of its Spot Satellite Communicators manufactured in China.

According to the company, the Communicator’s internal voltage regulator can stop working, resulting in the inability of the Communicator to transmit messages and tracking information in emergency situations.  Spot LLC has received two reports of product failure in temperatures below 40 degrees (Fahrenheit), but there have not been any reports of injuries related to the recalled Communicators.

The affected Communicators were sold through Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, REI, L.L. Bean, and other retailers nationwide from July 2010 through March 2011 for $549.
