A Houston maker of air conditioner and heat pumps is recalling 30,000 units with a power cord that can overheat and cause a fire hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today.
Goodman Company is voluntarily recalling the packaged terminal air conditioner/heat pump (PTAC) units in the wake of 11 reports of smoke or fire associated with the power cords.
No injuries were reported, but the CPSC says it is interested in hearing about any additional incidents not yet reported. This is a reannouncement of a recall of the same units in August 2008; a CPSC spokeswoman says two of the 11 incidents occurred since the first recall and the commission is concerned users aren’t aware of the hazard.
Subject to recall are the 5.0 kW Amana-brand, Comfort-Aire-brand and Century-brand PTAC units with model numbers PTxxx3x50xx (Amana) and EKTxxx-150x (Comfort-Aire and Century) and serial numbers 0702112056 through 0804237539.
