Standards updates and releases published by the International Electrotechnical Commission:
IEC 60794-2-22:2016:
This standard includes the Optical fibre cables – Part 2-22: Indoor cables – Detail specification for multi-simplex breakout optical cables to be terminated with connectors and is now available on the IEC webstore.
Description: “IEC 60794-2-22: 2016 is a detail specification and specifies breakout optical cables with multiple simplex fibre cables for termination with connectors. The requirements of the sectional specification IEC 60794-2 are applicable to cables covered by this document. The requirements of the family specification IEC 60794-2-20 are applicable to breakout cables to be installed without terminated connectors.”

IEC 60695-11-5:2016:
This standard includes Fire hazard testing – Part 11-5: Test flames – Needle-flame test method – Apparatus, confirmatory test arrangement, and guidance and is now available on the IEC webstore.
Description: “IEC 60695-11-5:2016 specifies a needle-flame test to simulate the effect of a small flame which may result from fault conditions, in order to assess the fire hazard by a simulation technique. The results of this test may be used as elements of a fire hazard assessment which takes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use. It is applicable to electrotechnical equipment, its sub-assemblies and components and to solid electrical insulating materials or other combustible materials. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2004. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- The scope has been broadened to allow this test method to also simulate the effects of small flames from outside the equipment;
- Propane and butane gas are the specified fuel source with a minimum purity of 95 %;
- A new concept has been added which allows the burner to be moved during the test to avoid dripping material from falling onto the tip of the burner tube;
- The burner tube material is now a referenced source;
- The reference for the copper block material has changed – the ISO publication (ISO 1337) has been withdrawn with no replacement. A new callout is now used and Informative Annex C and a bibliography have been added.

IEC 62281:2016:
This standard includes the Safety of primary and secondary lithium cells and batteries during transport and is now available on the IEC webstore.
Description: “IEC 62281:2016 specifies test methods and requirements for primary and secondary (rechargeable) lithium cells and batteries to ensure their safety during transport other than for recycling or disposal. Requirements specified in this standard do not apply in those cases where special provisions given in the relevant regulations, listed in 7.3, provide exemptions.
NOTE – Different standards may apply for lithium-ion traction battery systems used for electrically propelled road vehicles.This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, published in 2012, and constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- Deletion of the wire mesh screen from the evaluation of test criteria for an explosion;
- Extension / modification of the shock test parameters so as to achieve constant energy behavior for large batteries as well as explanations in a new Annex A;
- Modification of the external short-circuit method so as to allow the short-circuit to be applied to large batteries after they have been removed from the temperature chamber;
- Change of the cell diameter distinguishing between impact and crush test from 20 mm to 18 mm;
- Addition of possible content for a transport certificate.
