Rohde & Schwarz, a leading manufacturer of test & measurement, communications and broadcasting equipment, has developed an advanced portable receiver for in-field radiomonitoring applications. Operating in a wide frequency range from 9 kHz to 7.5 GHz, the R&S®PR100 is ideal for quickly detecting and locating the source of radio frequency interference (RFI), electrical interference and intermodulation interference disrupting wireless microphones.
Featuring a compact and light-weight design, the reliable R&S®PR100 provides 10 MHz IF spectrum and demodulation with bandwidths ranging from 150 Hz to 500 kHz.
The R&S®PR100 portable receiver scans a broad frequency spectrum, including radio signals from wireless intercom systems, cordless phones and cellular phones (GSM, UMTS, and CDMA2000®) in parallel to quickly detect and assist in eliminating the source of interference affecting wireless microphones. The R&S®PR100 portable receiver features state-of-the-art digital signal processing that provides high receiver sensitivity to enable detection of extremely weak signals without loss in processing speed.
Unwanted interference can originate from internal or external sources. RFI can be caused by radio and TV transmitters, communications equipment, cable television systems and other types of equipment that generate radio frequency energy as part of their operation. Computers and digital equipment, heavy electrical equipment, lighting systems and faulty electrical devices can cause electrical interference. Intermodulation is a type of interference caused by the internal combination of strong radio signals in wireless receivers.
“The R&S®PR100 portable receiver’s advanced functions and control concept have been optimized for RFI, electrical interference and intermodulation interference monitoring tasks. The receiver combines portability, ease of operation and direction finding capabilities to provide an ideal solution for tracking down unwanted interference in wireless microphones,” said Greg Kregoski, business development manager at Rohde and Schwarz. “Despite its compact design, the R&S®PR100 offers a wide range of functions otherwise available only in larger equipment with higher price points. Its favorable price/performance ratio makes it an indispensable instrument for all radiomonitoring tasks where high mobility and cost efficiency are crucial.”
The R&S®PR100 offers three scan modes:
- Frequency scan mode is used for scanning a specific frequency range with user defined parameters; step size between 1 Hz and 1 GHz.
- Memory scan mode is for scanning channels stored in a specific memory range of the device. The user can set parameters such as frequency, demodulation type, bandwidth and squelch for each line in a memory table. This could be a channel table for any type of interferer such as a 35 MHz standard for RC model airplanes
- Panorama scan mode is used as a “quasi spectrum analyzer” for a wide scanning range without scanning — as the PR100 Series uses a receiver technology that does not scan, but rather listens to the entire spectrum to immediately detect any spurious emissions. Step size, start/stop frequency and sampling analog RF panorama scan resolution can be set. Decreasing the resolution increases the measurement time depending on the RFI signal. For optimal results, start with the highest resolution and reduce it according to the RFI signal.
The R&S®PR100 portable receiver features a built-in SD card for storage of measurements and provides LAN interface for remote control and data output. A 6.5″ color screen clearly displays spectrums and spectrograms (waterfalls).
