Piezoelectric Technology Used in Vibrating Insoles Helps Improve Balance

Piezoelectric Technology Used in Vibrating Insoles Helps Improve Balance | In Compliance Magazine

A team of researchers have developed vibrating insoles that show improvements in fall prevention, reduced postural sway, and gait variability as found in a study with 12 elderly participants. A readily available insole was modified to include two piezoelectric actuators. These actuators convert electrical energy to produce a vibratory stimulation when pressure is applied. These simulations help enhance the detection of nerve signals.

Advancing medical acoustic microscopy through innovative digital techniques: maximizing echo detection, enabling high-speed scanning, and achieving precise, synchronized ultrasonic imaging.

During the study participants went through a series of tests to measure their balance and gait while wearing the insoles. The results of the study show that the vibrating insoles reduced postural sway and improved walking stability.
