New Technique Changes Magnetic Properties with Small Electrical Signal

New Technique Changes Magnetic Properties with Small Electrical Signal | In Compliance Magazine

A new technique was developed that uses a small amount of applied voltage to switch the magnetic property of the materials. The technique was developed by researchers at MIT and was tested using a new type of memory chip. The chip requires no power to maintain data, lowering the overall power needs of the chip.

The team created a system that uses voltage to change the magnetic property to that which is 100 times more powerful than other research projects. They used an insulating layer that when voltage was applied, they were able to rearrange the location of oxygen ions. Additional testing showed that magnetic properties could also be changed by a pulse of laser light. This new technique could lead to the development of a new type of materials with switchable properties.
