New SVHCs Added Under REACH

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recently updated its list of substances of very high concern (SVHCs), an essential part of the European Union’s (EU’s) REACH Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.

According to a press release issued in mid-January by the ECHA, a total of six new substances have been added to the REACH Candidate List of SVHCs, due to the “carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction, persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) properties of the substances.” The additions bring to 197 the total number of substances currently on the Candidate List.

The EU’s REACH Regulation imposes strict notification and reporting requirements on manufacturers and importers when the concentration of any SVHC in a product exceeds 0.1%. Notifications in connection with any SVHC newly added to the Candidate List must be made within six months of its addition to the List, making July 15, 2019 the deadline for notifications in connection with these six substances.
