New State Radio Procedure Caused First Responder Radio Failures

The state of Wisconsin implemented a new emergency communication system and radio procedures earlier this year that caused radio interference to first responders’ radios in Dane County Wisconsin. Three police departments reported repeated radio interference while responding to emergency calls.

The state’s WISCOM emergency communication system started broadcasting a new radio frequency atop a Blue Mounds State Park tower. This new state frequency caused the radio interference and was immediately shut down as a channel for law enforcement use.
