New laboratories at Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center in Switzerland are offering scientists the ability to experiment at the atomic scale with unprecedented accuracy. These ‘silent’ labs are shielded against all forms of background disturbances including external vibrations, acoustic noise, EM fields and temperature fluctuations.
The labs features include foundations built directly onto bedrock and an air-conditioning system that injects air up through a permeable floor in non-turbulent streams. Experiments can be controlled outside the lab via a remote control.
