New Minimum Energy Efficiency Requirements for Battery Chargers

The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has finalized new requirements regarding the minimum energy efficiency of battery chargers.

Published in June in the Federal Register, the DoE’s Final Rule specifies energy efficiency requirements for chargers based on energy and voltage levels, with seven different categories covering low-energy to high-energy devices. The DoE’s requirements closely mirror those currently in effect in California under energy efficiency regulations promulgated by the California Energy Commission.

The effective date of the DoE’s rule is August 12, 2016, and manufacturers and importers will be required to comply with the new energy efficiency requirements by June 13, 2018.
