New Mexico State University Student Project Focuses On Improving Cane Used by Visually Impaired Individuals

Students in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Mexico State University have been working to improve the white cane used by visually impaired individuals as a method of being aware of their surroundings.

The students attached sensors to the cane to create a system that wirelessly transmits information to the user of potentially harmful objects that are in their way. The personal frontal sensory shield system is designed to protect users by reaching areas that are not covered in the cane’s trajectory and also to detect elevation changes. The sensor sends information through a Bluetooth transmitter, and audio signals are then sent to Bluetooth headphones.

Read more how the students have created a prototype and what other steps of the project are being researched.
