New Fiber Optic Cable Improve Data Transmission Speeds

New Fiber Optic Cable Improve Data Transmission Speeds | In Compliance Magazine

A new fiber optic cable was developed that can transmit the contents of more than 5,000 DVDs in a single second, six times faster than a previous record. The fiber contains seven cores instead of one and includes a more energy-efficient signal processing algorithm. Each core can transmit three times more data than previously possible.

The new cable has achieved a data rate of 5.1 tBit/s on a single wavelength over a single fiber. The development of this new cable could lead to petabit-per-second speeds in several years and make advancements towards meeting the target date for this data transmission rate set by the European Commission.
