New ETSI Standard Strengthens Interoperability of Next Gen Emergency Communications

ETSI has published ETSI TS 103 480, a new Technical Specification establishing a standardized framework for interoperability testing across next-generation emergency communications networks. The specification ensures that systems from different vendors can operate seamlessly together, supporting reliable access to emergency and life-saving services across Europe and beyond.

As emergency communications shift toward next-generation architectures, the specification addresses interoperability across a range of critical functions — including location delivery, Advanced Mobile Location (AML), multimedia communication, and test routing and policy functions. It also supports key emergency communications initiatives already in deployment: eCall (mandatory in all new EU vehicles since 2018), Next Generation 112 (covering voice, video, and real-time text), and Public Warning Systems for citizen alerts.
