New Consortium to Develop Electronic Systems with Ultra-Low Energy Consumption

Electronic Systems with Ultra-Low Energy Consumption | In Compliance Magazine

Nine organizations from six different European countries have formed a consortium to develop new electronic systems with ultra-low energy consumption. The E2SWITCH project will focus on Tunnel FET (TFET) heterostructures built on silicon substrates, and use quantum mechanics phenomenon to produce operating voltages up to five times lower than current mobile phone circuits.

Current methods of scaling threshold voltage effect the autonomy and energy consumption of electronic devices, but also compatibility with emerging energy harvesting technologies. The new technology developed through the E2SWITCH project will create devices that consume less energy and are offer more stability over a wide temperature range. These new optimized electronics could be expanded beyond mobile devices to be used in automotive and aerospace applications.
