MKT Film Capacitors for AC Applications

EPCOS develops heavy-duty MKT film capacitors For AC applications

Iselin, NJ, September 28, 2009 – EPCOS has developed a new series of MKT capacitors for AC applications that are able to withstand severe ambient testing conditions of 85o C and 85 percent relative humidity for 1000 hours under an AC load with minimum parameter drift.

The new MKT film capacitors of the B3293* series cover a capacitance range from 0.1 to 10 µF and are designed for a nominal voltage of 305 V AC to IEC 60384-14. Their maximum operating temperature is 105 °C. The types with capacitances of up to 2.2 µF have X2 safety certification (IEC 60384-14 / EN 60384-14).

A Dash of Maxwell’s: A Maxwell’s Equations Primer – Part Two

Maxwell’s Equations are eloquently simple yet excruciatingly complex. Their first statement by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864 heralded the beginning of the age of radio and, one could argue, the age of modern electronics.

These new capacitors feature:

  • High capacitance stability
  • Very small dimensions
  • X2 safety approval up to 2.2 µF

Possible applications include those making very high demands on reliability, such as in automotive electronics, or applications in which an uncontrolled change in capacitance can cause circuit malfunction, which can occur with capacitive power supplies where the capacitor operates in series with the power network.  Thanks to their high humidity resistance, these capacitors can also be used in outdoor. They are also especially suited for home appliances, power meters and smoke alarms, as well as for motion sensors and rolling shutters.

The new series is available for sampling and mass production in the November/December timeframe, with pricing starting at $0.12-$3.25 each depending on capacitance value.
