Massachusetts Chicken Gets 3-D Printer Leg

Is there no end to the wonders available through 3-D printing technology?

Reuters reports that a Massachusetts chicken was scheduled to receive a prosthetic limb made on a 3-D printer. The fabricated limb will replace the chicken’s original right leg which was compromised from birth by a torn tendon that hindered the chicken’s mobility. The cost of the prosthetic replacement is estimated at $2500.

The three month old chicken, named Cicely, is owned by Andrea Martin, who operates the Black Thistle Farm in Clinton, MA, a haven for rescued chickens. The surgery was scheduled to be performed by veterinarians at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Similar surgeries have reportedly been previously performed on dogs and other animals.

Martin is covering the total cost of Cicely’s surgery from her own personal funds. No news on the outcome of the surgery was available as of this writing.
