Mary Barra Elected as General Motors’ Next CEO

Earlier this week, General Motors announced that current CEO Dan Akerson will retire as CEO in early January 2014. Mary Barra was elected by the Board of Directors as the new CEO – the first female CEO among all major automakers.

Barra currently holds the title of Executive Vice President, Global Product Development, Purchasing, and Supply Chain and has been with GM for 33 years. She has held several positions from manufacturing to engineering to senior staff positions. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Kettering University (formerly the General Motors Institute) and an MBA from Stanford.
