Making the Most of 2016: Professional Development Options for Compliance Engineers

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.” –Benjamin Franklin

The start of a new year is a time when we usually reflect on the progress we’ve made during the past year and set our goals for the year ahead. More often than not, your professional development goals include training or some form of higher education to expand or refresh your technical knowledge. We’ve queried our training contacts and resources from across the compliance industry and compiled in this article a wide range of options to help you meet your own professional development goals in 2016, including both public and custom workshops and seminars, offered in person and online.

Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electrostatic Discharge

Altair offers three-day training on FEKO, a comprehensive electromagnetic simulation software suite. The courses include a presentation and hands-on exercises. Details are available at www.feko.info/support/training-and-courses.

Bruce Archambeault
will teach several seminars in 2016. Check www.brucearch.com for details.

PCB Design Seminar for Real-World EMI Control

This seminar is designed for working engineers involved in PCB level design during the product development process. Proper EMC design is critical for product success and can have little to no impact on the company when done properly. EMC is not magic! Dr. Archambeault will break down the science, provide the latest insights, and you can directly apply it in the lab.

Advanced EMC & Signal Integrity Performance

This course goes beyond the basics to help understand the fundamental physics involved and to be able to make trade off decisions when the normal rules-of-thumb cannot be applied. The rules-of-thumb will help engineers make the correct decisions, but often the ‘shades of grey’ between the absolute black and white extremes are desired. This seminar will examine these grey areas and provide guidance to help engineers make the difficult trade off decisions.

D.L.S Electronics Systems, Inc.
offers a two-day applications seminar and one day workshop.

EMC By Your Design: A Practical Applications Seminar and Workshop

Using updates of the latest developments in research, standards, regulations, instrumentation and services, participants will study EMC design techniques and the calculations required to design a product to meet compliance regulations. After two days of intense study of EMC and design principles, students in the workshop will design, from start to finish, an EMC compliant product. The goal of this workshop is to help design engineers and technicians learn to apply the EMC design principles they learn in the seminar to real life products. April 12-14, 2016 and October 4-6, 2016 in Northbrook, Illinois. Visit www.dlsemc.com/emc-class/emc-seminar.htm to learn more.

Doug Smith
is adding a vendor show and other features to his course this year. He says, “If taken after a conventional EMC seminar, it would increase understanding of the previously taken seminar significantly due to the extensive demos I use and simple explanations of phenomena.” Find details at http://emcesd.com/#BoulderCity.

Design Troubleshooting, EMC, and ESD

This three day seminar takes the best points from Doug Smith’s seminars and compresses them into three action packed days with lecture, video, and many demonstrations on live circuits. Time is allowed for attendees to operate the experiments if they want. In two days, you will learn how to make accurate measurements in the lab and then apply those techniques to design verification and troubleshooting as well as EMC problems. The techniques and experiments are geared to the development lab and common equipment found there. During an optional third day, ESD/EMI at the system level will be covered as well as applying system level ESD stress to components, such as LEDs, in a test environment. February 22-24, 2016 in Boulder City, Nevada

The ESD Association holds educational opportunities throughout the year to provide engineers with the knowledge and tools needed to meet the challenges of ESD in their companies. For example, the association co-sponsors regional tutorials with local chapters, conducts a national tutorial and education seminar in conjunction with the annual EOS/ESD Symposium, and publishes and distributes numerous educational materials on ESD. For full details, visit the ESD Association’s website at www.esda.org.
