The Brazilian Judiciary has found that electromagnetic fields generated by power lines in São Paulo are 10 times greater than the standard of 1.0 microtesla. The action was brought up by two resident associations in the city that they should not be exposed to the risks of EM fields.
The Court of State of São Paulo (Tribunal de Justiça de São Paulo) has decided that the electric power concessionaire must reduce the electromagnetic field generated by their power lines that pass through neighborhoods. This decision is in line with other international courts that have stood in defense of the environment and have shown the risks of exposure to electromagnetic fields. The electric power concessionaire has filed an appeal to the Brazilian Constitutional Court, but no action has been taken place by the Constitutional Court to take the case.
