Layered Graphene Advances Development of High Frequency Electronic Devices

University of Manchester researchers have found a way to layer graphene with white graphene (hexagonal boron nitride) in a stack that creates crystals that could be used in the development of next generation transistors. The research team had previously demonstrated how heterostructures could lead to the development of new materials that meet industrial demands.

They took their research one step further by demonstrating how heterostructures electronic behavior can be greatly changed by precisely controlling crystalline layer orientation within the stacks. They tested their theory by aligning two graphene electrodes separated white graphene and found electron energy and momentum was conserved. This breakthrough could lead the way for ultra-high frequency electronic or photovoltaic sensors.
