Largest North America Battery Energy Storage System Opens

Largest North America Battery Energy Storage System Opens | In Compliance Magazine

The largest battery energy storage system in North America has opened in Tehachapi, California. The Tehachapi Energy Storage Project is a 32MWh system containing lithium-ion batteries. The battery system is located in a 6,300 square-foot facility at Southern California Edison’s Monolith substation.

The battery system contains 604 battery racks, 10,872 battery modules, and over 608,000 individual battery cells. The system will provide the ability to evaluate lithium-ion battery performance in real-world conditions. Due to the proximity of the system to Tehachapi Wind Resource Area, the project will also help to integrate variable renewable energy resources into the electric grid.
