Jameco Electronics kicks off its 40th anniversary celebration by marking the milestone with a special cover on its most recent electronic components catalog. The new catalog features a montage cover made of previous catalog covers, including the very first Jameco catalog.
In 1974, founder Dennis Farrey had a vision. He set his mind to helping the electronic hobbyist market, which was being neglected by the large distributors at the time, and collected 100 popular electronic components then ran a small advertisement in Radio Electronics magazine.
“Jameco has grown far beyond my father’s expectations when he first thought about developing a business,” said James Farrey, Jameco’s second generation CEO. “Forty years seems like a long time, but for us it feels like we’re just getting started. Today we focus on corporate accounts, small business and, of course, hobbyists. We have served millions of customers around the world and are looking forward to serving even more.”
The inaugural catalog was a single folded 11X17 sheet of white paper with black ink and a few grayscale images of products. As the decades rolled by, the catalog evolved significantly to present products in the way that engineers design. Side-by-side presentations allow for easy product comparison from parametric data to price.
“With an average tenure of more than 9 years, it is our employees that have made the difference for our customers,” said Farrey. “We have highlighted some of our long-time employees in this catalog to let everyone know much we value our team.”

As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, Jameco is also hosting a Customer Appreciation Day event on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to visit Jameco Electronics at 1355 Shoreway Road in Belmont, Calif. for refreshments, tours and a customer raffle.
