The IEEE has announced the release of the IEEE 802.11af™-2013 amendment, which allows regulators a new tool to add to their spectrum-sharing toolbox. The revision has created a global standard allowing worldwide users to utilize unused or underused RF spectrum based on location and time of day.
Operating in 6, 7 and 8 MHz channels, IEEE 802.11af allows backwards compatibility with existing international TV band allocations. With the modified standard, operation can be configured for one to four channels providing a way for devices to aggregate sufficient space in the fragmented TV band spectrum to provide higher data rates.
