Hoverboard Recall List Expands Due to Explosion and Fire Hazards from Lithium-Ion Batteries

Several brands have issued recall notices for self-balancing scooters/hoverboards due to explosion and fire hazards. The lithium-ion battery packs in the self-balancing scooters/hoverboards can overheat, posing a risk of smoking, catching fire and/or exploding. The recalls impact over 16,000 hoverboards from brands including Smart Balance, Drone Nerds, Go Wheels, iHoverspeed, iLive, Tech Drift, and Sonic Smart.

The CPSC advises Consumers of the effected models to immediately stop using the recalled scooters/hoverboards and contact the manufacturer for replacement information.

Smart Balance Wheel Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Salvage World 

The firm has received on report of a battery pack catching fire and/or exploding resulting in property damage. The hoverboards were sold in black, white, red, or blue from Salvage World stores in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from August 2016 through March 2017 for about $150.

Contact Salvage World for instructions on returning their hoverboard for a store credit.

Drone Nerds Recalls Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards 

The hoverboards were sold in a variety of colors from Drone Nerds store in Aventura, Florida and online at www.dronenerds.com from November 2015 through March 2016 for about $300.

Contact Drone Nerds to return the unit to receive a full refund or store credit.

Go Wheels Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Four Star Imports; Sold Exclusively at Village Mart

“Go Wheel” is printed in a circle on the middle of the unit where the sides connect. The “Go Wheel” identification will illuminate when the hoverboard is powered on. They were sold in black, white, red, blue, gold and pink and were sold exclusively at Village Mart store in Memphis, Tennessee from October 2015 to March 2016 for about $200.

Four Star Imports has received one report of a self-balancing scooter/hoverboard overheating. There have been no reports of injuries or property damage. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled self-balancing scooters/hoverboards and contact Four Star Imports to return their unit to receive a free UL2272-certified replacement unit.

iHoverspeed Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Simplified Wireless 

The hoverboards were sold in black, blue, red and white and have “iHoverspeed” printed on the front. Units were sold on Amazon.com, iHoverspeed.com and other online retailers from November 2015 to December 2015 for between $290 and $330.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled self-balancing scooters/hoverboards and contact Simplified Wireless to return their unit to receive a free UL2272-certified replacement unit.

iLive Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Digital Products 

This recall involves iLive self-balancing scooters, commonly referred to as hoverboards, with model numbers GSB56BC, GSB56RC, GSB65BUC, GSB56WC and GSB56GDC. The model number is printed on the bottom of the unit. The hoverboards have two wheels, one at either end of a platform, and are powered by lithium-ion battery packs. “iLive” is printed in the center of the hoverboard’s top surface as well as underneath the top deck, facing the ground. The hoverboards were sold in black, red, white, blue and gold. Some units were sold with a black carrying case; and were sold by Ace Hardware and hh gregg stores nationwide, Heartland America catalogs and online at AceHardware.com and hhgregg.com from April 2016 through March 2017 for between $170 and $200.

The firm has received one report of the battery pack overheating and smoking. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled scooters/hoverboards and contact Digital Products (DPI) for instructions on how to obtain a free UL2272-certified replacement unit.

Tech Drift Recalls Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards 

The hoverboards were sold in black and white. The units were sold online at www.techdrift.com and www.amazon.com from December 2015 through April 2016 for between $400 and $500.

Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled scooters/hoverboards and contact Tech Drift for instructions on returning their hoverboard for a free UL2272-certified replacement unit.

Sonic Smart Wheels Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Dollar Mania

This recall involves Sonic Smart Wheels self-balancing scooters, commonly referred to as hoverboards, with model number S-01 or SBW666SL printed on the bottom of the unit. The hoverboards have two wheels at either end of a platform and are powered by lithium-ion batteries. The hoverboards were sold in black, blue, green, red, white and yellow and have an “S” printed in the center of the wheel caps. The models were sold exclusively at Dollar Mania stores in Bossier City and Shreveport, Louisana from August 2015 through December 2016 for about $200.

The firm has received one report of a self-balancing scooter/hoverboard catching fire in Louisiana in 2017 resulting in approximately $40,000 of property damage to a consumer’s home. No injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled self-balancing scooters/hoverboards and contact Dollar Mania for instructions on returning the hoverboard to receive a free UL2272-certified replacement unit.
