HMI Industries Inc. of Strongsville, OH, has agreed to a $725,000 civil penalty for failure to report a defect involving their Majestic 360 floor cleaners and for underreporting the number of incidents and injuries. Federal law requires a company to report defective products immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The company filed a full report with the CPSC in February 2009 stating they had received 40 complaints of overheating and damage to carpets, with no injury reports. During that same time, the CPSC had received almost 2,000 reports of electrical arching, 120 reports of overheating and property damage and two reports of injuries. A recall of 44,000 floor cleaners was announced on April 29, 2009. In addition to the monetary fine, the company has agreed to implement and support the compliance program to support the CPSC statutes and regulations.
