GM Expands Compact Car Recall Due to Ignition Issue

General Motors has issued an expanded recall affecting 1.37 million compact cars due to an ignition problem. The cars included in the recall are Chevrolet Cobalts and HHRs, Pontiac G5, Solstices and Saturn Sky models that were built between 2003 and 2007.

According to GM, the vehicle’s ignition can accidently switch out of the “Run” position while the car is being driven and the car’s engine shuts down. When this happens, the power brakes, power steering and airbags do not function.  Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified to bring their car to a dealer to replace the ignition switch at no charge. Until the ignition switch can be replaced, GM is urging owners to only hang the car keys from their keychain to avoid any additional weight that could make the key more easily turned.
