The New Year has just begun, but the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has wasted no time in issuing a new round of warnings to property owners in the New York metro area for allowing pirate radio operations on their properties.
The New York Office of the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau issued two Notices of Illegal Pirate Radio Broadcasting on January 4th in connection with unlicensed FM broadcast station operations in Brooklyn, NY. The Bureau issued a third Notice on January 11th in connection with unlicensed operations in Manhattan. In each case, agents from the Enforcement Bureau responded to complaints of unlicensed operations and used direction-finding techniques to confirm the exact locations of the illegal radio signals.
Recipients of the Notices were informed of their potential liability for permitting the pirate broadcasts and ordered to submit evidence that pirate operations are no longer being conducted on their properties. Failure to comply with the terms of the FCC’s Notice could subject non-compliant property owners to a maximum of over $2.3 million in financial penalties.
