Florida Man Fined $48,000 for Blocking Communications During his Commute

A Florida resident has been fined $48,000 for using an illegal jammer for up to two years during his daily commute. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) accuses Jason R. Humphreys of using a signal jamming device to intentionally block nearby wireless communications.

The FCC’s Enforcement Bureau launched an investigation after a local wireless service provider complained about unexplained interference that had interrupted cellular service and disrupted local police communications. Enforcement Bureau agents used special equipment to detect the source of interference, and then together with the local Sherriff’s office, they stopped Humphreys’ vehicle while he was operating an illegal jammer.

As a result, in April 2014, the Commission proposed to fine Humphreys $48,000 for illegal signal jamming. Humphreys failed to respond to the proposed fine, so on May 25, 2016, the FCC issued an order that fully affirms and imposes the $48,000 fine.
